“This book was a game-changer for me – first long form, multi-character, sweeping historical novel I’ve read. Other series may have been longer, over all, but this was a stately, dark gem of a story. I fell in love with A.S. Byatt’s detailed prose. The audio book version is excellent – a great way to avoid the criticism of “wooden prose” that some have leveled. While it’s true, sometimes the details are gone into where not exactly needed, I loved how Byatt’s story invoked me into the action.”
